The National Economics University and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Vietnam cordially invite you to attend and contribute to the thematic seminar “Internal Migration in the Red River Delta and Mekong River Delta: Current Issues and Policy Implications” with the attached agenda.
Time: 09:00 – 11:30, Tuesday, September 24th, 2024
Venue: Room G, Building A1, National Economics University, 207 Giai Phong, Hanoi
Zoom: https://undp.zoom.us/j/83633728410 (Meeting ID: 836 3372 8410; Passcode: 058499)
The workshop’s purpose is to share and discuss the results of the above-mentioned research conducted jointly by the Institute for Sustainable Development (under the National Economics University) and UNDP in Viet Nam, funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through the research program on Provincial Governance and Public Administration Performance Indidex ( PAPI) in Viet Nam.
The workshop is held in the context that the two regions of the Red River Delta and the Mekong Delta have extensive industrialization and urbanization but have spatial differences, so they create regions with different “push” and “pull” migration, leading to challenges in intra-regional migration management in the two largest delta regions of Vietnam. The study has been conducted in 9 provinces. Four localities, including Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, and Nam Dinh, are in the Red River Delta; the other four localities, including Can Tho, Long An, An Giang, and Soc Trang, are in the Mekong Delta; and Binh Duong in the Southeastern region is also a province that receives many migrants from the Mekong River Delta provinces.
The workshop will provide a variety of in-depth perspectives on three dimensions related to migration in the Red and Mekong Deltas: (i) the drivers of migration; (ii) challenges for migrants to meet their livelihoods, access to public services and social protection; and (iii) opportunities to ensure the rights of migrants to be recognized, protected and integrated. At the workshop, experts will also exchange some policy implications and suggest several measures to contribute to improving inclusiveness in the management of inland migration in the two delta regions.
