Dear Distinguished Guests,

The National Economics University and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Vietnam cordially invite you to attend and speak at the specialized seminar "Internal Migration in the Red River Delta and Mekong Delta: Current Issues and Policy Implications" according to the enclosed program.

  • Time: 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM, Tuesday, September 24, 2024
  • Venue: Room G, Building A1, National Economics University, 207 Giai Phong Street, Hanoi
  • Via Zoom: https://undp.zoom.us/j/83633728410 (Meeting ID: 836 3372 8410; Passcode: 058499)

The purpose of this seminar is to share and discuss the aforementioned research findings conducted collaboratively by the Institute for Sustainable Development (under the National Economics University) and UNDP in Vietnam over the recent period, with funding support from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through the Provincial Governance and Public Administration Performance Index (PAPI) research program.

The seminar is organized within the context where both the Red River Delta and Mekong Delta regions are experiencing widespread industrialization and urbanization, yet with spatial differences that create areas with varying migration "pull" and "push" factors, leading to challenges in managing intra-regional migration governance in Vietnam's two largest delta regions. The research was conducted across nine provinces and cities, including four localities—Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, and Nam Dinh—from the Red River Delta; four localities—Can Tho, Long An, An Giang, and Soc Trang—from the Mekong Delta; and Binh Duong province in the Southeast region, which also receives many migrants from Mekong Delta provinces.

The seminar will provide in-depth perspectives on three dimensions related to internal migration in the Red River Delta and Mekong Delta regions: (i) the driving forces behind internal migration; (ii) challenges faced by migrants in their daily lives, access to public services, and social welfare; and (iii) opportunities to ensure migrants' rights to recognition, protection, and integration. During the seminar, experts will also discuss policy implications and suggest measures that contribute to ensuring inclusivity in internal migration governance in both delta regions.
