Abstract

Since the mid-2010s, Vietnam has experienced a concerning reversal of the gender wage gap. This study uses diverse datasets to analyze this trend at the district, firm, and individual levels. We emphasize the critical role of capital deepening in the manufacturing sector as a key driver. Our findings indicate that the decline in female relative to male wages stems from reduced female labor demand rather than supply-side factors. At the district level, our results suggest heterogeneous effects across districts with different stages of economic development. In high-income districts, capital deepening primarily impacts the gender wage gap through hourly wage rates. Conversely, in low-income districts, where labor mobility is limited, capital deepening influences the gender wage gap through both working hours and hourly wage rates. Younger females with lower educational attainment are particularly vulnerable to the effects of capital deepening.
